Real Silk Fabric Test
Burn Test: The burn test is one of the most common methods for identifying silk.
To perform this test:
Take a small sample of the fabric and carefully set it on fire using a flame (such as from a match or lighter). Silk is a natural protein fiber, so it will burn easily and produce a characteristic smell of burning hair or feathers. The flame will extinguish quickly, and the ash left behind will be soft and powdery. The fabric should not continue to smolder after the flame is removed.
Soaking in 84 Disinfectant: Another method used to test the authenticity and quality of silk is soaking the fabric in an 84 disinfectant solution (a commonly used disinfectant in many countries).
To perform this test:
- Prepare a diluted solution of 84 disinfectant.
- Submerge the fabric in the solution, ensuring it’s fully immersed.
- After a period of time, the silk fabric will disappear and completely dissolve in 84 disinfectant. 84 disinfectant is a strong alkaline. This is why silk products cannot be washed with soap.
